Honeymoon Part 4: Hilo

After getting into Hilo from Mauna Kea, we went sightseeing in the area.

Our hotel in Hilo had a great view of the bay.

The hotel was called "Uncle Billy's". I tried to get a discount, since I am Uncle Billy, but they wouldn't go for it.

There was a nice walk in the Akaka falls area, where we saw these flowers.

Huge groves of bamboo were in the area.

A garden we went to labelled this "Mickey Mouse Plant". At the time I wondered what it was called before 1930. Now I hear that this name is not correct, it is a variety of ginger instead, so the point is moot anyway.

I'm pretty sure that these are Banana flowers.

I liked this view of the stream going between two bamboo groves.

I don't know what this waterfall is called. We just saw it from the road.

At the Uma Uma botanical gardens (still under construction), the cats and the peacocks get along pretty well together.

This might be a passionflower. I was very impressed by it; the fibers coming out of the center, the two rings (stamens? pistils?), one with 5-way symmetry the other with 3-way...overall a really interesting flower.

After Uma Uma, Sue and I went to Rainbow falls, which is in Hilo.

Rainbow Falls again.

There were lots of small waterfalls emptying into the lake under Rainbow Falls.

When I heard it was called "Pee Pee Falls," I just had to go see it. OK, so it's actually called Pe`e Pe`e falls...close enough.

I think that this place was called Leiwei beach.
